The bioinformatics centre at M.S. University of Baroda was started in
the year 1989 as a Distributed Information Sub Centre (Sub-DIC) under
Biotechnology Information System network (BTISnet) of the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science &
Technology, Govt. of India. As a recognition
to the training activities, the centre was upgraded to a Distributed
Information Centre (DIC) in the year 2004.
The main function of the Bioinformatics centre is to provide
information to the interested users on topics pertaining to the
relevant areas of Biotechnology, especially Genome analysis. The
Centre also
serves as the regional node under the ICCB-net in collaboration with the
Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel. This tie-up has helped in
using new approaches to data analysis in the current research and
research initiatives in
Genomics and Proteomics. For several years,
the centre is contributing significantly for the progress of the
biotechnology research activities of the department.
This facility also provides a strong support to the research
projects of the department and to the Ph.D. scholars. The
informatics gateway is being used by the faculty members, students
and other research staff for accessing different data bases for
sequence analysis, deposition of nucleotide sequences, retrieval of
sequences, structural analysis, literature search and access to
several on-line journals.
