1960s

 

Dept. was established in 1964 through funds from Alembic Chemical Ltd. Vadodara. Late Shri Hitendrabhai Desai, then C.M. Gujarat, performed the stone laying ceremony of the Department in 1968.

 

Courses in microbial genetics, and molecular biology were designed with active support from the University of Edinburgh (Dr. G.S. Boyle from Prof. Hay’s lab) and Dr. Heniz Sadler of Max Plank Institue, Cologn, Germany and Dr. N.K. Notani from BARC, Mumbai. Dr. K.S. Gopalkirshnan, Hindustan Antibiootics, Pune and Dr. M.R.S. Iyengar, Alembic Chemicals, Vadodara were helpful in providing valuable suggestions in fermentation technology. These courses were   then taught practically at no universities in India and hence attracted a large number of bright students from different places and department became a major centre of post-graduate teaching and earned reputation world over in offering M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes in Microbiology.

 

The new building of the department was inaugurated by Dr. M.S. Swaminathan in 1969.

 

 

1970s

 

Hosted Annual meeting of the Association  of Microbiologists of India  in 1970.

 

Dept. was identified as one of the centers to carry out research in Biological Nitrogen Fixation (BNF) under All India co-ordinated programme on BNF by ICAR, New Delhi.

 

Dept. was granted research grants under PL 480 schemes.

 

 

1980s

 

Hosted annual meeting of Society of Biological Chemists (SBC)  India in 1982.

 

Department was selected as one of the first five centers to start M.Sc. programme in Biotechnology by Dept. of Biotechnology, Govt. of India.

 

DSA phase I programme awarded by UGC, New Delhi, 1983-1988

 

COSIST programme by UGC, New Delhi  was granted  during  1984-89

 

 

1990s

 

Major grant to carry out research in Agriculture and Environmental microbiology was given by GSBTM, Gujarat.

 

DAS phase II programme by UGC, New Delhi 1995-2000.

 

Biotechnology stall in the Science Exhibition as a part of the 79th Indian Science Congress, held at M.S. University, Baroda in 1992.

 

 

2000s

 

Genome research Centre was initiated.

 

Two new Post M.Sc. Diploma courses  as per following started through DBT, Govt. of India funding

Genetic engineering and bioprocess developmen

Intellectual property rights, biosafety  and regulatory affairs

 

Following programmes were granted by DST, New Delhi

DST-FIST  phase I                        2001-2006

DST- FIST Phase II                       2006-2011

UGC-DRS phase I             2001-2006                              

UGC- DRS phase II                       2007-2012

 

Major renovation of the dept undertaken through donation received from Alumni (Rs. 10 lakhs) and infrastructure grant (Rs. 40 lakhs) received from UGC, New Delhi
