Dept. was established in 1964 through funds from Alembic Chemical Ltd. Vadodara. Late Shri Hitendrabhai Desai, then C.M. Gujarat, performed the stone laying ceremony of the Department in 1968.

Courses in microbial genetics, and molecular biology were designed with active support from the University of Edinburgh (Dr. G.S. Boyle from Prof. Hay’s lab) and Dr. Heniz Sadler of Max Plank Institue, Cologn, Germany and Dr. N.K. Notani from BARC, Mumbai. Dr. K.S. Gopalkirshnan, Hindustan Antibiootics, Pune and Dr. M.R.S. Iyengar, Alembic Chemicals, Vadodara were helpful in providing valuable suggestions in fermentation technology. These courses were   then taught practically at no universities in India and hence attracted a large number of bright students from different places and department became a major centre of post-graduate teaching and earned reputation world over in offering M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes in Microbiology.

The new building of the department was inaugurated by Dr. M.S. Swaminathan in 1969.

Hosted Annual meeting of the Association  of Microbiologists of India  in 1970.

Dept. was identified as one of the centers to carry out research in Biological Nitrogen Fixation (BNF) under All India co-ordinated programme on BNF by ICAR, New Delhi.

Dept. was granted research grants under PL 480 schemes.

Hosted annual meeting of Society of Biological Chemists (SBC)  India in 1982.
